UGA Optimistic Ahead of 2025 Season With Young Team

By Don Stone, Football Atlanta

As the Georgia Bulldogs gear up for the 2025 season, optimism and challenge mingle on a roster full of both proven playmakers and hungry emerging stars. With a new starting quarterback, Gunner Stockton, and a defense drawing high praise, the Dawgs are previewed as contenders—though not without key questions to answer.

                                                          Coach Kirby Smart’s Vision
Head coach Kirby Smart set the tone in his preseason message: “I want to see improvement. I want to see experience. I want to see depth building. We talk about it a lot…Our best teams have been able to run the ball when they have to and stop the run when they have to—every game looks different. What do I want out of those guys? I want to see buy-in. It’s a culture thing. You get what you demand, and we’re going to demand that you stop it, and be able to do it in running.”

On the emotional side, Smart added: “It’s putting the pieces together. The puzzle of this team is different than last year and being able to decipher what this group needs from me. My why: seeing these kids graduate and become better men.”

Smart’s high standards are echoed by his emphasis on “Fire, Passion, Energy”—three words he’s urged the team to live by through summer workouts and into fall camp.

Offensive Identity: The Gunner Stockton Era
J.D. PicKell of On3 described the significance of Stockton’s first season as starter: “First SEC start for Gunner Stockton on the road…this is kind of a tone setting game for this Georgia football team. Like, we don’t care about the external. Don’t care about the crowd noise. … we find a way to get it done. That’s going to kind of be the attitude for this Georgia team.”

Insiders have also noted the offense is “oozing with talent,” especially at wide receiver—a position expected to produce more in 2025. Still, they caution that for the Dawgs to reach their ceiling, new faces must prove themselves against a brutal schedule.

                                                                                                                      Defense Returns to Its Roots
Buzz is growing around the potential for the defense to dominate. As discussed on DawgNation Daily: “There is more buzz growing that Georgia’s defense can take a step toward dominance. … Expect Elo Modozie to be the best defensive player in the league.”

Anonymous SEC coaches still see UGA as elite—though “thin at linebacker”—highlighting the importance of health and player development throughout the season.

Inside the locker room, Georgia players echo the staff’s urgency and hunger. Veteran lineman Micah Morris summed up the player mentality: “He needs to be the guy. … They’re counting on him to be a bulldozer on that interior line.”

Tight end Oscar Delp, praised for his offseason work, knows: “It’s like having a Y that can physically hold up and block, which no tight end likes to hear, but the NFL loves that. … We need him to be a factor at the point of attack.”

Expectations are high: Georgia will again enter the season as a contender, but with a new QB and a young defensive core, every week will be a proving ground.

Kirby Smart and his staff are focused on toughness, buy-in, and building leadership as the foundation for another run at the SEC Championship and a College Football Playoff spot.

“Fire, Passion, Energy”—the coaching staff’s rallying cry—will be a theme to watch as Georgia looks to reclaim dominance in 2025.

Bulldogs fans and college football insiders know: in Athens, the standard never changes, no matter how many new faces hit the field.
