Conference Realignment Ahead Of The 2026 College Football Season
Ahead of the 2026 college football season, 22 teams changed conferences. Five of the Group of Six leagues experienced changeover, while the Power 4 remained the same. Sunbelt Conference: Additions: Louisiana Tech. Holdovers: Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, James Madison, Louisiana, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Old Dominion, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Troy. Georgia State
Georgia State will officially kick off the 2026 Sun Belt football season when it hosts North Carolina A&T on Sept. 4, the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Georgia State’s non-conference schedule also includes an in-state matchup at Kennesaw State (Sept. 12), a trip to UCF (Sept. 19) and a visit from Northern Illinois (Sept. 26). Alongside annual dates with their East Division brethren, the Panthers will travel to Arkansas State (Oct. 24) and host Louisiana (Nov. 28) from the Sun Belt West Division.

The 2025 season was a banner year for the Sun Belt. Conference champion James Madison earned a spot in the College Football Playoff, a first for a Sun Belt program. Now, how can the conference follow that up this fall with a slightly different set of teams? Texas State left for the Pac-12 and was replaced by former Conference USA member Louisiana Tech in the West Division. James Madison returns as the favorite to win the Sun Belt yet again, and they have the highest projected win total at 8.5.

Louisiana Tech returns to Sun Belt Conference as 14th member
The Sun Belt's CEOs voted to invite Louisiana Tech as the league's 14th member, giving the conference a replacement for Texas State.
Louisiana Tech's return will take place for the 2026 season..
The entry date is expected to be figured out over the next few weeks as Louisiana Tech works out its departure from Conference USA, which is expected to cost at least $5 million. The Bulldogs were part of the league from 1991-2001 before
departing for the WAC.
