2025 Sun Belt Conference college football projections, preview
James Madison has won 28 games in three seasons, while South Alabama has won 24. Louisiana has four 10-win seasons in the past six years, Troy has five in the past nine, and Appalachian State has five in the past 10. Even with a recent stumble, Coastal Carolina has two in the past five. Texas State is coming off its two best FBS seasons. Georgia Southern is coming off its best season in four years, Marshall its best in nine. Even Georgia State has five winning seasons in the past eight years.

Odds to Win the Sun Belt in 2025 College Football Season (James Madison Opens as Heavy Favorites)
Since joining the FBS, James Madison has hit the ground running. The Dukes narrowly missed the 2024 Sun Belt title game thanks to a pair of razor-thin defeats, but a bruising run game, deep backfield and a reloaded defense keep them in pole position for 2025 as +260 favorites. The uncertainty lies under center — star QB Alonza Barnett III (knee injury). HC Bob Chesney has insurance in Holy Cross product Matthew Sluka and Richmond’s Camden Coleman.

The Sun Belt Conference placed numerous student-athletes on national preseason award watch lists heading into the 2025 season. Lombardi Award (Nation’s Most Outstanding College Lineman) – Announced August 12: 54 on Watch List - Jason Henderson, Old Dominion (RS Sr., LB – Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) Manning Award (Nation’s Best Quarterback) – Announced August 14: 27 on Watch List - Colton Joseph, Old Dominion (RS So., QB – Newport Beach, Calif.)

Louisiana Tech returns to Sun Belt Conference as 14th member
The Sun Belt's CEOs voted to invite Louisiana Tech as the league's 14th member, giving the conference a replacement for Texas State.
Louisiana Tech's return will take place no later than July 1, 2027.
The entry date is expected to be figured out over the next few weeks as Louisiana Tech works out its departure from Conference USA, which is expected to cost at least $5 million. The Bulldogs were part of the league from 1991-2001 before
departing for the WAC.
