The Georgia Bulldogs are set to kick off their 2025 football season at home against the Marshall Thundering Herd on August 30 at Sanford Stadium in Athens. Head coach Kirby Smart recently spoke with the media about the team’s preparation, expectations, and respect for their opponent as they begin what promises to be an exciting season.
“We’re opening up with Marshall. Our guys started our prep last week,” Coach Smart said. “I’m excited for a home opener. Sometimes we start on the road or at a neutral site, so this one means a lot. The weather looks great for our fans, which always helps.” He emphasized the respect he holds for Marshall’s coaching staff and program. “Coach Tony Gibson has been a defensive coordinator for a long time and very successful. He’s passionate about Marshall, and his staff reflects that passion. Marshall has a tremendous history and played in a challenging Sunbelt Conference last year, so we know they’ll bring a great effort.”
When asked about how the Bulldogs have been preparing given Marshall’s roster changes, Coach Smart focused on internal team discipline. “You start with yourself. It’s about how you run to the ball, how you strike, how you run and throw without turning it over. We’ve had some sloppiness in first games in the past with penalties, so we want to clean that up. The opponent is us—we have to focus on how we play every week, including this one.”
Smart also touched on the challenge posed by Marshall’s overhauled roster full of transfers and new players. “Nobody knows exactly who’s in those spots yet. This will be a game with a lot of adjustments early on, but ultimately it’s about how we execute our game plan.” The coach highlighted several key performance goals beyond just winning, including third down conversion rate, red zone efficiency, turnover margin, and penalty count.
Coach Smart addressed playing time opportunities for backups: “If you can play winning football in practice, you’ll see game reps, regardless of where you sit on the depth chart. It’s about competing and playing well consistently.”
As the Bulldogs gear up for their season opener in front of a raucous home crowd, Coach Smart remains focused on the fundamentals and playing their best football. “We’ve got big goals this year, and it starts with day one against Marshall. We’ll look at how we perform on all phases of the game and make improvements as the year goes on.”
The stage is set for a spirited home opener on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET at Sanford Stadium on Dooley Field. Georgia hopes to use this game as a springboard for another dominant season as the Dawgs aim to defend their SEC Championship.
The game will be televised on ESPN.
