A perfect weather day for Senior Day in Athens as the graduating players were honored on the field with their families before the game. A good crowd considering the matchup with 5 sections in the upper deck half filled.
The mismatch on paper materialized into a mismatch on the field very quickly. It actually looked like a Futures Game, the one MLB plays with the stars of tomorrow before the All Star Game.
The starters stayed in for the most part for the first half. But, the second half was all second, third and even fourth string backups, evidenced by the lack of scoring. But, a lot of young players got a chanced to get some valuable game time snaps.
The 35-3 final score was pretty much what it was just after the half when all the subs came in. The Dawgs wrapped up their home schedule over the Charlotte 49ers showcasing depth and discipline as they pushed their record to 10-1 on the season.
First Half Surge – Georgia set the tone early, jumping to a 28-3 halftime lead. Sophomore running back Nate Frazier scored two first-quarter touchdowns, while freshman Bo Walker found the end zone three times for his first career scores. Quarterback Gunner Stockton played a little more than a half, finishing 17 of 21 for 196 yards. Georgia finished the day with 449 yards of total offense, racking up 30 first downs to Charlotte’s seven...most of those in the second half against backups.
Defensive Dominance – The Bulldogs’ defense suffocated the 49ers, allowing only 169 total yards and intercepting two passes—one from Ellis Robinson IV, his third of the season, and another by Daniel Okonkwo, the first of his career.
Coach Kirby Smart praised his team’s focus and effort: “It’s about playing to our standard, not the opponent. We wanted to finish at home the right way, and our guys responded.”
Walker reflected on his performance: “I just wanted to make the most of my opportunities. The offensive line opened up big holes for me and it felt great to get to the end zone for the first time in front of the home crowd.” Stockton added, “We executed well early, spreading the football around. A lot of guys stepped up, which is what you want to see in a game like this.”
“He has great vision, he’s low to the ground, he’s really hard to tackle,” said Smart about Walker. “I love his spirit because he smiles every day at practice and he cuts up. He’s now starting on two special teams and he had three touchdowns today.”
The victory marked UGA’s ninth straight win at Sanford Stadium as the Bulldogs now turn their sights to Georgia Tech and the postseason. With another balanced showing on both sides of the ball, Georgia’s playoff hopes remain very much alive.
They prepare now for the Yellow Jackets on a short week. Like last year, the annual rivalry game will be played on a Friday afternoon after Thanksgiving. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. on ABC. But, unlike many recent seasons, both teams are playing well and will have a lot to play for beyond the rivalry.
