The long summer wait is officially over in the Classic City. On Saturday, a sea of red and black will once again submerge Lumpkin Street for the traditional Dawg Walk, welcoming a new era of Georgia football. The reigning SEC Champion Bulldogs, coming off a 12-2 campaign in 2025 and consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoff, are looking to launch another national title run.

   Standing in their way for this historic first-time meeting are the Tennessee State Tigers. Georgia enters the matchup as massive favorites, carrying a flawless 10-0 record in season openers under head coach Kirby Smart.

The Dawgs enter the season ranked #3 in the nation. FanDuel has them listed as a huge 45.5-point favorite over the Tigers, who have already dropped their season opener 26-24 to Jackson State.

   Yet, despite the lopsided projections, Smart has spent the final week of fall camp making sure his team treats the Tigers with the same intensity as an SEC heavyweight.

   “With fall camp complete, we are starting fresh,” Smart told reporters on Tuesday. “Just don’t tell anyone we have all our questions answered yet. We are searching for an identity, especially finding that consistent pass rush. Saturday is the first true test of where this defensive front stands.”

   The defense, coordinated by Glenn Schumann, is anchored by a deep rotation featuring junior tackle Christen Miller and rising star Jordan Hall. They will be tasked with disrupting a Tennessee State offense looking to rebound under head coach Reggie Barlow after a difficult 2025 season.

   On the other side of the ball, all eyes will be glued to the backfield. Quarterback Gunner Stockton takes full command of the offense for his second year as the definitive starter, shying away from no one as he engineers the Bulldogs’ high-powered attack.

   Behind him, explosive running back Nate Frazier is expected to shoulder a heavy load on the ground.

   “We enter this season with incredibly big goals,” center Drew Bobo said, reflecting on the team’s championship expectations. “But you can’t reach the playoff in Week 1; you can only build the foundation. We are ready to write the first chapter of this 2026 team.”

   A player to keep an eye on is Tennessee State running back Brenton Paul who has been named the first recipient of the newly renamed OVC Football Rookie of the Week award. The back accounted for 55 all-purpose yards in his collegiate debut against Jackson State. The true freshman rushed nine times for 38 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per carry, and caught two passes for 17 yards.
