Georgia Endures Two Hour Storm Delay in Win Over Austin Peay

By Don Stone, Football Atlanta

On a rainy Saturday at Sanford Stadium, the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs fought through a tough 28-6 win over the visiting Austin Peay Governors. Despite the victory, frustration lingered after an uneven offensive performance and a long weather delay that stretched halftime into nearly two hours.

Georgia’s rushing attack powered the scoreboard, with running backs Chauncey Bowens and Nate Frazier each scoring two touchdowns. Frazier ran for 69 yards on 14 carries, while Bowens added 56 yards on 11 carries. Coach Kirby Smart praised Bowens’ physicality, saying, “Really physical. I thought he got yards after contact” as the Bulldogs relied heavily on their ground game in the 421-yard total offense.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton passed for 227 yards, focusing on a balanced attack but without a touchdown pass this time. Reflecting on a crucial 99-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, Stockton said, “It was awesome. Our whole O-line, receivers, everybody pushed the ball down the field, so it was awesome to see.” However, the offense struggled at times, including a notable moment in the first half when Georgia was stopped five times at the 1-yard line by Austin Peay’s resilient defense.

Coach Smart acknowledged the mixed bag of performance, noting the challenge to prepare for conference play next week against Tennessee: “We’ll find out. That’s for sure. If you haven’t been on the road and your first game on the road is in the SEC, it’s always an adventure.” He also thanked fans for their patience during the weather delay, expressing gratitude for their energy once play resumed.

Austin Peay’s defense and determination impressed, especially with a goal-line stand at the end of the first half. Austin Peay linebacker Myles Wiley reflected the team’s grit, saying, “We’re so proud of how we played out there… We gave our all and we have this mantra: We will. And I think we will be proud of what we did out there.”

The win extended Georgia’s home winning streak to an SEC record 33 games but left questions about offensive consistency and ball security, as Georgia lost two fumbles and left points on the field, including a missed touchdown opportunity near halftime. Still, the Bulldogs look ahead to their SEC opener against Tennessee, aiming to improve and build off the resilience shown in this challenging matchup.
