Is it better to play in the SEC Championship Game? That has become a huge topic of debate on “The Paul Finebaum Show” and other college football outlets. Does the big game even matter anymore with the 12 team playoff looming?
SEC Commissioner Greg Stankey obviously deems it as “valid.” I think you heard from the two head coaches about the validity and importance and the meaningfulness around our championship game.,” he said on Thursday. “Others can certainly comment from their perspective. The interest in monitoring fan interest through ticket sales remains strong. In talking last year with Kirby and members of his administration, the ability to be a conference champion, have a clear conference champion, has meaning. I think there is validity. There has been validity.”
No. 3 Georgia and No. 10 Alabama will clash Saturday in the SEC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a high-stakes rematch with College Football Playoff implications hanging in the balance for both programs.
Revenge on Kirby Smart’s Mind – Georgia head coach Kirby Smart enters with his Bulldogs at 11-1 after grinding out a 21-17 win over Georgia Tech, 8 days earlier in this same building. But, the memory of a 24-21 regular-season loss to Alabama on September 27 lingers. “That game showed us exactly where we need to improve,” Smart said this week. “Alabama is explosive, physical, and well-coached under Kalen DeBoer. You don’t beat them unless you’re flawless in all three phases.” Smart praised DeBoer’s offensive creativity: “They stress you with tempo, motions, and a quarterback who can extend plays. We’ve spent every practice simulating that.”
The Dawgs can take motivation in seeing Kennesaw State win a Conference USA Championship Friday night by beating a Jacksonville State team that they had lost to earlier in the season. UGA wants to continue that trend in this rematch.
But, the numbers create a puzzling dilemma. Since 2020, Georgia is 71-3 against everyone else not named Crimson Tide. But, they are amazingly just 1-4 against Alabama in that time. This is the seventh championship game showdown between the two since 2012…two for a national championship. Bama is an astounding 17-1 in Atlanta combined between MBS and the Georgia Dome.
The value of experience – “I think playing in the venue is a big experience key,” Smart said. “I think having been in there with even the freshmen last week, but the guys that played last year, I always think experience is a weapon. So is talent. So is preparedness. All those things will be a factor in the game. But our kids have played in this game quite a bit. They enjoy it. It’s really a credit, a reward, to a season that was extremely tough. A lot of really tough games in the fourth quarter for both teams. This is what it is. It’s a chance to win a championship.”
Stockton’s Dual-Threat Edge – Quarterback Gunner Stockton has been Georgia’s steady hand since the Alabama defeat, completing 71.4% of his passes for 2,465 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just four interceptions while adding 361 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. “Gunner’s poise has been huge,” Smart said. “He doesn’t force throws, manages the run game, and makes us better when the pocket breaks down. Against Alabama’s front, that mobility will be key.”
DeBoer, Tide Poised for Playoff Push – Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer has the Crimson Tide surging at 10-2, winning seven of their last eight after the Georgia victory. DeBoer’s up-tempo attack ranks top-15 nationally in scoring, setting up a contrast with Georgia’s top-ranked defense that has allowed just 15.2 points per game. “Georgia’s the standard in this conference,” DeBoer said. “Kirby Smart doesn’t lose these games twice. We’ll need explosive plays and zero self-inflicted wounds.”
Playoff Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher – A Georgia win secures an SEC title and likely a top-two or three playoff seed; a loss still positions the Bulldogs well but opens the door for Alabama.
For UGA, even a loss would likely drop them down just a few notches and probably result in them hosting a playoff game at Sanford Stadium in Athens.
Oddsmakers list Georgia as a 1.5-point favorite in a projected shootout. Smart summed up the urgency: “Playoffs start now. Win here, and we control our destiny. This is why you recruit, coach, and play in the SEC.”
Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, televised on ABC.
