Georgia looked every bit like a playoff contender Saturday night, rolling past Mississippi State 41-21 at Davis Wade Stadium behind a commanding defensive effort and a poised performance from quarterback Gunner Stockton.
After Mississippi State scored on their opening drive, The Bulldogs (8-1) seized control and ran off 38 unanswered points before the home Bulldogs were able to get on the board again late in the third quarter.
Stockton threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to a deep receiving corps that consistently found space against the Bulldogs’ secondary. Running back Nate Frazier had a career day rushing for 181 yards and a TD. Noah Thompson, Zacharia Branch and Oscar Delp also added scores through the air, powering Georgia’s balanced offense.
Head coach Kirby Smart praised his team’s focus after back-to-back SEC road wins. “We wanted to come out and make a statement,” Smart said. “The guys executed well, played physical, and finished strong. You have to earn every win in this league, and we did that.”
Mississippi State (5-5) managed a late rally behind its passing game but never seriously threatened Georgia’s lead after halftime. The Bulldogs’ defense recorded four sacks and forced two turnovers, keeping constant pressure on the home team’s offense.
It was the Bulldogs’ 47th consecutive win over an unranked opponent, the longest streak in the country.
“Our defensive front set the tone,” Smart said. “That’s the identity we want heading into next week.”
No. 5 Georgia now turns its attention to a marquee November 15 matchup against No. 11 Texas in Athens — a top-10 showdown that could shape the SEC and national playoff picture.
“It’s going to be an electric atmosphere back home,” Stockton said. “We’re excited for the challenge. November’s when championships are won.”
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
