In what has become a familiar scenario, No. 5 Georgia played in still another nail biter, narrowly edging out the Florida Gators 24-20 on Saturday at EverBank Stadium, extending their winning streak over their bitter rivals to five straight games.
Trailing 20-17 in the fourth quarter, UGA’s defense delivered a critical fourth-down stop against Florida’s Jadan Baugh at the Bulldogs’ 18-yard line with just under eight minutes remaining. That pivotal play energized the Dawgs’ offense, which responded with a trademark drive featuring quarterback Gunner Stockton converting a clutch third-and-8 with an 18-yard pass to Zachariah Branch. Running back Chauncey Bowens then powered through the Florida defense on a 36-yard touchdown run to take a 24-20 lead with 4:36 left in the game.
“It’s always another close battle in the SEC, but this team just won’t go away,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. “We stayed composed, kept fighting, and that’s what this league demands.”
Stockton was solid, going 20-of-29 for 223 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, leading Georgia’s balanced attack. The Bulldogs’ defense, known for its stout run defense, flashed its trademark toughness late in the game to preserve the narrow win.
Florida, playing under interim head coach Billy Gonzales following the recent firing of Billy Napier, showed grit despite the loss. Trey Smack provided a highlight with a 54-yard field goal—the longest of his career and a school record—putting Florida briefly ahead in the fourth quarter. However, costly missed opportunities on fourth-down conversions late in the game ultimately hindered their upset bid.
Despite injuries and a depleted receiving corps, Florida freshman receiver Dallas Wilson had a breakout game with 121 yards on nine receptions, keeping Florida competitive throughout.
The victory improves Georgia to 7-1 and solidifies their place among SEC contenders. Florida falls to 3-5, navigating newfound challenges amid coaching changes.
“We respect Florida—they fought hard,” Smart said. “But we have our sights set on carrying this momentum forward. This rivalry always brings out the best in both teams.”
With the SEC title race heating up, Georgia looks to build on this pivotal road win as they head to Starkville and Mississippi State. The noon game next Saturday will be either on ESPN or ABC.
