4-1 Georgia Hosts 1-4 Mississippi State Saturday In Athens

By Don Stone, Football Atlanta

UGA has their second straight home game as Mississippi State makes their way to Sanford Stadium on Saturday. The 4-1 Dawgs come into the game as heavy favorites.

Their positioning in the SEC standings was helped a lot last weekend with big losses by undefeated Alabama to Vanderbilt and Tennessee to Arkansas.

After a tough loss to Alabama, they bounced back with a commanding victory against Auburn last weekend.

The wide receiver room has been thinning out with an earlier release of RaRa Thomas before the season due to a family violence arrest. Now, Miami transfer Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely after an arrest on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.

The senior receiver had 11 catches for 149 yards with two touchdowns in the No. 5 Bulldogs’ first five games. He had three receptions for 51 yards in Saturday’s 31-13 victory against Auburn at Sanford Stadium.

UGA will have to avoid what is a trap game with Mississippi State coming in as a 32 point underdog and #1 Texas waiting in the wings the following week. But, it should be an easy win with the Dawgs undefeated at home since 2019.

The other Bulldogs are 1-4 and 0-2 in SEC play, second to last in the standings.

No. 5 UGA’s Carson Beck will look to running back Trevor Etienne to help establish the ground game averaging 75 yards per game with three touchdowns. He could have a big day against a defense that has had problems stopping the run.

The loss of Young can easily be made up with the likes of speedster Arian Smith, Dominic Lovett, who leads in catches with 22 and Dillon Bell, who leads in touchdowns with three.

Mississippi State has been marred by inconsistency, with their lone victory coming against Eastern Kentucky. QB Blake Shapen will need to step up, especially after throwing for nearly 1,000 yards this season. The Bulldogs from Starkville are hungry for redemption after suffering a heavy 45-19 defeat in their last encounter with Georgia two seasons ago.

They managed to secure a narrow win against Georgia in 2021 that still lingers in the minds of their players and fans alike.

Georgia should win be three touchdowns, but it unlikely to cover that 32 point spread.

Kickoff is at 4:15 PM ET. It will be televised on the SEC.
