Show MoreHC Dell McGee Press Conference Previewing Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt has an outstanding offense and defense. They're top 12 in stopping the run in the country and 33rd in rush offense. Coach Tim Beck has been running this offense for years. The QB that he brought over from New Mexico State, Diego Pavia, understands offense checks. They've got really good backs, receivers that can make contested catches. Their O-Line is big and physical. Defensively, they're big up front. They're well coached. Clark Lea, being an ex-Vanderbilt player, has a lot of pride in his university.

Even after a dominant win on Saturday, Lea has emphasized the importance of not overlooking GSU. He spoke highly of Panthers’ coach Dell McGee and OC Jim Cheney. “Georgia State is a proud program that beat an SEC team in 2019, has four winning seasons in the last five [years and] six bowl games since their first FBS season in 2013,” Lea said. “They’re going to be prepared for us. We need to level up in terms of our mentality so that we can represent our program in the way we want to represent our program.”

Given the short distance from the Georgia State campus, I was surprised there was not a lot more blue in the crowd. GT fans filled most of what they didn’t, though. All 6,000+ tickets allocated to students were sold out. Big plays, a balanced offensive attack and defensive stands highlighted the first ever meeting between the two football teams as the Yellow Jackets racked up 499 yards of offense. “The key to it all is being able to get guys touches,” Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said.

Show MoreBattle rages for starting quarterback job at Georgia State
There will be many new faces in the starting lineup for the Georgia State football team in the coming season, but none as obvious as at QB, where the slate has been wiped completely clean. Darren Grainger finished his record-setting career by earning MVP honors at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and is trying to catch on with the Canadian Football League. Mikele Colasurdo, the highly regarded prospect, was the top reserve for three years and left the program. That leaves the key position wide open for HC Dell McGee.

Considering the timing, the hiring of Dell McGee was a hit, although it may take a minute for the impact to come into full view Georgia State. His recruiting acumen, which he didn’t have the chance to exercise this cycle, will help. For now, it might be a Year Zero situation. Former Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott’s resignation was one of the stranger moves of the offseason, mostly because it happened during their spring practice. Because of the timing, the roster is in a state of limbo.
