Conference USA Football Power Rankings - Week 6
Currently, Conference USA is a three-team race, with a crop of other programs trying to figure out who exactly they are. Let’s start with the lesser end as Middle Tennessee, NM State and Kennesaw State all lost to out-of-conference competition. The Aggies fell to their rival and now are dealing with the off-field issue of their offensive coordinator embroiled in controversy. MTSU dropped a contest against Memphis, which was expected and it’s going to be an uphill climb for the FBS newcomers in Kennesaw State.

Players of the Week
Sam Houston’s Hunter Watson and Christian Pavon, along with FIU’s Travion Barnes, earned CUSA Player of the Week honors for week five. Offensive POW – Hunter Watson, Sam Houston – Junior – QB. Watson was an integral part of the Bearkats' 40-39 win, overcoming a 22-point deficit to take down Texas State on Saturday at NRG Stadium. He rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns, along with throwing for 95 yards to help lead Sam Houston (4-1, 1-0 CUSA) to their largest comeback in program history.

To kick-off Conference USA Media Day, the first team to take the stage were the newest members, the Kennesaw State Owls. "There's a lot of excitement, a lot of buzz around our campus and community about this opportunity," said head coach Brian Bohannon in his opening statement. "We're excited about it as well. There's a lot of unique things going on at this time. We're a young program going into our tenth season of football and are already making this jump, which is a huge and heavy lift."

The 2024 CUSA Football Kickoff and Media Day began Tuesday, July 23, at the home of the PGA of America in Frisco, Texas. CUSA Commissioner Judy MacLeod, as well as head coaches and players from each of the 10 CUSA programs are on hand to discuss and preview the upcoming season. This marks the first formal event under the league’s 10-team configuration. Attending athletes are headlined by 2023 CUSA MVP and Liberty QB Kaidon Salter, First-Team All-CUSA pick Shiyazh Pete (OL, NM State).

Conference USA released the 2024 preseason watch list, as selected by the league’s 10 head coaches. Five student-athletes from each of the conference’s 10 member institutions are recognized as key players to watch ahead of the 2024 season. Gabriel Benyard, Ethan Newman, Sidney Porter, and Pooda Walker represented the Owls in the announcement. Benyard was named to both the Offense and Special Teams watch lists. Newman joined him on the offensive side, while Porter and Walker represented the defense.

Nine student-athletes were tabbed to Athlon Sports' Preseason All-Conference USA Team. Redshirt jr. Gabriel Benyard earned three selections including second team punt returner, third team kick returner and fourth team RB honors. Joining Benyard on the third team was RB Michael Benefield, DL Donovan Westmoreland and Jordan Miles and LB Garland Benyard. TE Carson Kent, LB Donelius Johnson and DBs JeRico Washington Jr., and Sidney Porter were named to the fourth team.
